Title Overlander 4WD Magazine Announces 2004 4WDOTY
Date 2005.01.21

Overlander 4WD Magazine, Australia’s longest-running offroad magazine, has announced the winner of its
prestigious 4WD of the Year award for 2004.

The award carries a lot of weight with 4WDers and offroad enthusiasts, and throughout its 25 year history,
Overlander 4WD Magazine has consistently chosen the pick of the crop for its 4WDOTY accolade. 2004 was
no different.

In 2004, more than 17 new or revised 4WD vehicles were released to the buying public, making them eligible
for entry into the Overlander 4WDOTY award program. Of those vehicles, six were shortlisted for the award,
and stringently tested over five days, covering nearly 2000km. The testing took place on a wide variety of
terrain, including sand driving, trail driving, highway cruising and tough offroad sections designed to push the
vehicles to their limits.

The six shortlisted contenders were BMW X5 3.0d, Ford Territory TS AWD,SsangYong Rexton Sport 270,

Nissan Patrol ST 3.0di, Land Rover Discovery 3 SE TDV6 and Land Rover Discovery 3 SE V8.

Former Overlander Editor and regular road tester Fraser Stronach said of the winning vehicle “With Discovery
3, Land Rover’s engineers have produced a vehicle that combines first-class on-road manners with genuine
offroad ability.

“Anyone can build a vehicle that’s great offroad but drives like a truck on-road, while there are plenty of vehicles
that are great on-road, but useless off it. To produce a vehicle that does both well is the real challenge for 4WD
manufacturers, and Land Rover, as it did with the original Range Rover some 35 years ago, has once again s
hown the way forward.”
