Title Domestic auto sales soar 14.6% in April
Date 2005.05.03

Assisted by an increasing volume of sales on new cars and rising overseas
demand, the volume of domestic car sales soared 14.6% in April.

Based on data compiled from the big five car makers, including Hyundai, Kia,
GM Daewoo, Ssangyong and Renault Samsung, the number of cars sold in the
previous month added up to 438,901 units, an increase of 14.6% compared to
the corresponding period of last year.

On the domestic front, sales performance shines, with the volume of domestic
sales registering at 92,476 units in April, an increase of 0.9% compared to
the previous month.

On the export front, however, the overall picture is rather sluggish and up
to 346,425 units were sold in overseas markets. Compared to the previous
month, the export performance represents a decrease of 2.9%.

"Continued downturn in domestic auto sales overshadows that of exports and
when a string of new cars destined for exports are on the market, the volume
of exports will pick up steam," according to an industry official.
