Ssangyong announced yesterday that it would open a plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi province, in 2010; the plant will
produce 100,000 autos a year. The plant will increase the Korean auto maker's annual production capacity to 320,000
from the current 220,000. To strengthen its position in the Korean market, Ssangyong plans to introduce six new
models by 2010, including a follow-up to its luxury sedan, the Chairman, in 2008, as well as three new sport utility
vehicles.
The company said it aims to increase its share in the Korean car market to 13 percent by selling 340,000 units
annually by 2010, over twice as many cars as it sold last year. It added that it would invest approximately 2
trillion won ($2 billion) to achieve its long-term plans, including the development of the new vehicles and the construction of the manufacturing plant.
Choi Hyung-tak, co-president of Ssangyong, asserted that the money for the investment could be raised purely through
the company's profits. If Ssangyong's financial situation or market share deteriorated, however, the company would focus its investment on developing new vehicles and postpone other investments..................
