Title Ssangyong Motor sales up 8.1 pct in April
Date 2014.05.02

SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- Ssangyong Motor Co. said Friday its sales in April moved up 8.1 percent on-year, propped up by consumer demand for its popular Korando family of rugged off-road capable vehicles.

The carmaker's total sales hit 13,634 units last month compared with 12,607 vehicles sold a year earlier. Domestic sales reached 6,010 units, a 17.5 percent increase from the same one-month period in 2013. Exports were tallied at 7,624 vehicles, a 6.9 percent gain from the fourth month of last year.

Ssangyong, the local unit of Indian sport utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra, said sales of its vehicles did well in Russia, China and Europe.

The company, the fourth-largest original equipment car manufacturer in South Korea, said it aims to sell some 91,000 cars overseas this year.

In the first four months of this year, sales were up 14.7 percent to 50,305 units, vis-a-vis 43,872 vehicles sold a year ago.

The carmaker said in a regulatory filing earlier in the week that its sales in the first quarter reached 862.6 billion won (US$836.7 million), a gain of 14.5 percent from 753.6 billion tallied a year ago. It said the company's operating loss stood at just 800 million won, from 18 billion won in the red in the first quarter of 2013, while its net earnings reached 10.7 billion won from a loss of 9.2 billion won.
