SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Yonhap) -- Ssangyong Motor Co., the local unit of Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said Tuesday its sales gained 2.8 percent from a year earlier in October on a surge in outbound shipments. In October, the carmaker sold 13,728 cars globally, compared with 13,359 vehicles sold in the same month last year, the company said in a press release. Domestic sales slipped 5.6 percent on-year to 9,450 vehicles as sales of its luxury passenger sedan, the Chairman, were nearly halved to 66 from 119 units over the cited period. Exports, on the other hand, spiked 27.7 percent on-year to 4,278 cars, more than offsetting the slight drop in sales here. Ssangyong Motor attributed the surge in exports to the launch of the trendy sport utility vehicle, the Tivoli. "In particular, Ssangyong's exports to the European market jumped over 20 percent compared to the same month last year and its exports to emerging markets including Iran showed significant growth helped by strong sales of the Tivoli brand models," it said. In the first 10 months of the year, Ssangyong Motor sold a total of 125,321 cars globally, up 7.1 percent from the same period last year. Domestic sales gained 5.2 percent to 83,379 units, with exports jumping 10.7 percent to 42,032 cars over the cited period. bdk@yna.co.kr
