SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- SsangYong Motor Co., said Monday it will export its flagship G4 Rexton sport utility vehicle (SUV) to India in the third quarter of this year as part of its drive to expand its presence in overseas markets.
SsangYong Motor, the South Korean unit of Indian carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., recently signed a contract with its parent company to ship the G4 Rexton SUV as a complete knockdown kit so it can be assembled in the market. The car will be assembled at Mahindra & Mahindra's Chakan plant, the company said in a statement.
The company introduced the G4 Rexton at the Auto Expo 2018 in Greater Noida, near New Delhi, last week in a move to take advantage of growing demand for SUVs in the vast emerging market.
The SUV-focused carmaker has shipped the large SUV to Europe, Latin America, New Zealand and Southeast Asian markets since its domestic launch in April last year.
For all of 2017, the carmaker sold a combined 143,685 vehicles, down 7.7 percent from 155,754 a year earlier.
Mahindra & Mahindra owns a 72.85-percent stake in SsangYong Motor.
